Most of my red duns end up looking dirty as they age, just like this. Definitely affected by the sooty gene.

The silvering on the fetlocks (like what you've just discovered with the plume), in this case IS caused by flaxen. I've seen this happen and we can even see this in certain belgians straight from the AC.
