As for your issue, you should be able to put two up for sale at OBO or private sale at once (for some of us, it will lock us out of putting any additional up until those two sales disappear, for others of us it does not. It's not supposed to, though).
If you put a horse up for general sale, then anybody can purchase it (as you found out). Not all of us (including myself) will actually read the ad of the horse; we'll just jump right to the horse's profile page.
If you put the horse up for general sale, you run the risk of somebody else purchasing the horse, so you can only ask for the horse to be returned to you. Many of us will concede and return the horse, some of us will not. What we are not allowed to do, is hold the horse hostage and ask for a large amount of money to return it.

If you choose to not put the horse up for private sale (which is available to us), then you incur risk of having it purchased from you. There are ways to help dissuade this from happening. These are as follows:
Put the horse up for quite a bit of money (much more than the horse is worth).
Leave the horse up for minimum amount of time (under a minute is best).
Post and purchase the horse from both accounts at the same time (you will need to have two separate browsers open at the same time, either two different ones, or on private browsing mode).

If you don't take such precautions, then your horse could be lost to you. This is the reason that private sales was opened for us, to stop this from happening. If you don't take advantage of it, then you are indeed risking your horses sale to somebody other than you.
I am sympathetic to your situation and hope that your horses get returned to you, but please don't yell at other players for purchasing horses that were indeed posted for public sale.

I am very sorry if I have caused any problems. It is my fault. I DID see the do not buy signs and I was trying very hard to avoid them. I thought it was strange because I don't buy pregnant horses. I would love to help you get you your horses back so if you could give me a name, and breed that would be wonderful. I take in a lot of horses and it is difficult to tell who I bought them from as they only tell the breeders name. I found this guy that was bred by ivy.allison. http://www.horseworldonline.net/horse/profile/1262706 If that is not him then there is a good chance that your horse was retired. I buy 17+ year old horses and age them out. I am so VERY sorry if your horse is retired and you can have one of my horses or if I can do ANYTHING to help you just let me know.

I agree with everyone. I would be outraged as well. I have similar things where I put horses up for offer and specifically say, "Do not offer if you are not (the person)" but people still offer and it blows up my notification box
