A little help please

Post by ScarlettDeath »

HI guys!

I have been trying to understand the genetics in this game but im still a little lost, i Understand horse genetics bc of another game i play but it actually shows you what the horses genetics are so you can breed for the outcome you want.
From what im gathering on here you have to look at the horses coat and use the forums that other players have posted and pretty much just guess at what they are? Some players sound so confident in the color/pattern of their horses and im just like..... its pretty!
So do people just get really good at remembering the exact colors or the Agouti or the Roan and the Extension or the others??

I have 2 questions about this filly

1. Why is it that she came out a grade horse? Im trying to breed Minis and i thought mixing the two parents would at least make a half or percentage of one.

2. What is her coat color? Im sure it will change as she is a newborn but i dont know what her pattern is either.

Epic Life
Grade Horse

Epic Suprise
Sire~Part Shetland/Falabella [50%]

REC LifeSaver
Dam ~ Part Miniature x Arabian [95%]

Thank you to anyone who gives me any info!

Working with parts, halfs and mixed can get a little hairy at times. But, this is a straightforward breeding issue. If you mix four different breeds together, you will almost always come out with a grade horse. To increase your chances of a mixed, part or half breed, you will need to use other grades (like the one you just made) or other horses that have only one other breed named. But I don't have the math down, so it could always come out incorrectly.

As said, however, in this exact case, it's a bit obvious. Because there are four named breeds among both parents, your foals will always come out as grades. Three named breeds might (should) come out as a part mini (or mixed).

It appears your foal is a chestnut. It appears she missed her mother's flaxen. She's also a leopard or full leopard. With a tobiano socking. :P

As for how we learn colors, we start slow and build on top of that.

Technically speaking, there are just TWO base colors. Black and Red.
On this game, I will also call agouti a base color, but it's actually a sub-type of black.

If you can figure out if you have a red-based horse or a black-based horse, then you're on your way for figuring out colors (by the way, color genetics will eventually be coming our way. :) ). Once you figure out if it's red (as in a red-head) or black, then you can say 'this horse is black with brown' or 'this horse is black without brown'.

Redheads won't show if they have brown.

Once you have 'black with brown' you can see if you have wild bay, bay or brown. Wild bay has super short black 'socks' on their lower legs. Think 'below the ankle'. Wild bays and bays have 'black points'. These are, black tipped ears, black lower legs and black muzzles, as well as black mane and tail, all on a red or redder body.
Brown, on the other hand has it a bit reversed. Their nose, in particular, is brown while their body is mostly black. you'll also see some brown or red coloration on their underbelly and in their flank area.

Now once you have brown down, you'll move on to cream. Cream makes brown into yellow and red into blonde. This is where buckskins and palominos come from. When you add two cream genes, it makes red into pale, off-color whites and browns into blondes. And it'll also bleach blacks into a really pale brown color.

It begins to get a little more complicated and involved at this point. But some of the other hints you can use are as follows:

Champagne always makes freckles. If you have freckles, you have champagne.

If you have BLUE eyes and white skin, you have a two cream genes OR a cream and pearl. This is a hint for a double dilute only.

If you have BROWN eyes and white skin, you have two pearl genes. This is a hint for a double dilute only.

Dun will often make primitive markings (think zebra-like stripes).

Roan is any other color plus white, interspersed hairs.

Tobiano is any markings on the horse. Currently responsible for all socks, blazes and 'paint' markings.

Silver when paired with black will always make a gray-looking horse (outside from other dilutions). This can come WITH dapples or WITHOUT dapples.

Leopard Complex includes snowflakes (the little white spots on the coat) as well as blankets (the big colored spots on a white background). This one is most easily identified (for color genes) only at their year birthday, but sometimes also requires a newborn pic for further confirmation.

Thank you so much! I have been looking at all the forms and I totally get that the poster know what color they were but I couldn't understand how they knew what they were. This helps a lot! I even tried looking at the forum with the pictures and what colors they were and like I said before I just couldn't understand how they figured out what was what. So thank you very much!

Like I said, just take your time going through learning the colors. It helps a LOT if you breed for the colors you're trying to learn. By training your eye on the foals and watching them as they grow up, you get to imprint it into your mind much more firmly.

If you get stuck again, or are looking to expand your color learning (and don't know where to go), let me or the community know and somebody will walk you through some of the other colors, dilutions and especially, color combinations.
