So with your horse, you have two 'discolorations' at work.
One is from the champagne gene.
Champagne is a gene that causes the horse's color to bleach with age. The older it gets, the more bleached-out the color becomes (lightens with age).
The other one is sooty. Sooty is, in my opinion, the reason why the mane and tail have both lost their rich color. And it's also responsible for the darkening of the neck, the forehead and likely the entire topline of this horse. Probably also the lower legs as well.

Champagne DOES lighten with age. I forgot that myself some time ago and had to ask the question. So it sticks in my head. It SHOULD be in Totina's guide that it does... let me see if it is.

I don't know whether on black it becomes lighter or not. I've never seen it or studied it. The difference might be so minimal that it can only be seen if one were to click on each gallery image in succession. I would say that it does NOT lighten the black coat. But I could be wrong with this.

Champagne on every other color however, does lighten and at a fairly drastic rate. There could also be (though I don't know for certain) a degree of lightening gene at work as well. Some may have a barely-lightening gene that will only fade the coat a little bit with age while others might have a much more expressive lightening gene that washes out the base coat until it's a barely-there style.

I had a really unique champagne somewhere that confused me for awhile... let me see if I can find it.

This horse has a static-sooty (one that comes on and doesn't change). But it's similar to yours. If you go through the gallery images, you'll also notice that he lightened with age as well. Took me forever to settle on what he was (color) and still I question if I'm right. But he's not a coat glitch. He is a red-base.
