I'm Curious

Post by MerrySmile »

So I'm curious...I've seen lots of crossbreeds in the sales. So here's my question: What is the reason for you cross breeding? I'd just like to find out. They don't seem very profitable, but....

I'm breeding a few Warlanders to Arabians to hopefully inherit the Arabian's dished face. Then I plan to breed them until they're back to being a full 100% Warlander

I'd thought about a reason being failed breed making foals, but hadn't thought of someone trying to get a trait into a different breed. Cool.

Yeah, I really like the dished face of the Arabians

Like PeacefulOreo said.

Other reasons to create a cross:
Most obviously, for recipe breeds, not just failed recipe breeds.
To create a breed that exists in real life, but not here on the game (such as the spotted draft breeds).
And less obviously, not necessarily to create a cross, but to create an offspring horse from two horses that just happen to be two separate breeds.
Such non-purebred horses have many uses, the least of which might be as grinders.
Speaking of, grades are quite useful for a lot of things as well.

Like I've always suggested, find a niche and carve yourself that money-making opportunity. Sometimes it takes time, but with enough growth and work, one can create the need, not just fill one.

  • To move some trait (e.g. tobiano pattern, high strength) to another breed.
  • To follow a breed's history that may not be exactly like the game.
  • To create a breed that doesn't exist (e.g. Carolina Marsh Tacky) on the game
  • To create a horse from real life (e.g. irl someone may own a Welsh Cob cross)
  • To create a game breed. To create a Mongolian, as example, got to cross Przewalski Horses & Tarpans. The same cross can make Exmoor ponies. Don't need Exmoor ponies, need horses listed as Przewalski Horse x Tarpans.
  • To just fool around. I once had a non-glitch (breedable) sort of "orangey" hued bay. Belgian cross. The result of fooling around with color inheritance

One more reason: to check the genetics. Some trait genes are recessive and the only way to see if a horse has them or not is to breed it to the gene carrier and see if the offspring shows it.
