Confirming a COI question I had

Post by BlackOak2 »

So the coefficient of inbreeding is an estimate of how related the seven previous generations are. As stated in our FAQ guide it is 'prediction of genetic homozygosity', as written by larrissar.
So the question that occasionally bothers me is that if two entirely unrelated parents have an offspring, but have very similar or possibly the same genetic codes (yes, I understand how difficult and unlikely that would be, but this is a what if), the offspring would still have a 0% COI, right?
Regardless of how genetically similar in traits they may be, the COI would still be zero value because they are not in fact related. The COI is solely calculated not on the same genes but on family members being inbred in some way.

Yes, your statement would be true according to Wright's method, but HWO uses Hardiman's.

That's handy information, thank you argent, but it doesn't confirm or deny what I want.
I am solely asking about the genetics and not the familial relations.
To give an example and simplify it to a simple, straightforward question, suppose this:
If we assume the following: Bl indicates the color black, Rd indicates red and Wh indicates white. One parent carries BlRd and the other parent carries BlWh. They are wholly unrelated to themselves or to each other.
They produce an offspring that carries BlBl.
According to the COI calculations we use, and the definition of genetic homozygosity being 'The state of possessing two identical forms of a particular gene, one inherited from each parent.'
This statement is then true: 'The foal will still offer a zero value for the COI, regardless of having identical genes, because neither parent has or offers a duplicated familial line either in itself or to one another.'

Yes that foal's COI would be zero.
