Money can be earned by entering local shows and player-made competitions, selling horses, mowing paddocks or selling things from your inventory. I cannot think of anything else.
This should be on 'Gameplay Questions & Help'.
PS: I highly recommend training horses before showing them in shows. Make sure to let the loading bar when you click on local shows completes before you press it again, otherwise you don't get the prize money.

PPS: if you are really having trouble, I have a horse (http://www.horseworldonline.net/horse/profile/497211) that I would not mind giving away as she only does well in endurance racing.
