The Harakeke Height's Grand Kaimanawa Overhaul

So I decided a while back that my herd needed a serious overhaul and some revamping. I demolished all my horses with the exception of a select few (cry cry cry) and now that I have a plan formulated I decided to come here to the forum to share my progress. First I'll let you in on my plan and then I'll share updates as progress happens. First things first I will explain a little about my planned herd set up.

My herd will be set up with six main foundation families and two sub families. The initial five families will all have a corresponding stat that they are linked to while the sixth family will be focused on general appearance and color. The first six families are as follows:

Huatau - be comely, suitable, elegant, graceful.
Marohirohi - be hard, strong, brave, resolute, determined, tenacious.
Manawataki - be rhythmic
Taurite - be alike, matching, equivalent, synonymous, balanced
Mohio - be accustomed, known, skilful, wise, intelligent, clever, bright
Humarie - be handsome, pleasant, beautiful, peaceful, gentle, amiable, nice, affable, genial.

The stats of the first five families are the four stats needed for my chosen discipline of hunter (movement, strength, tempo, balance) plus a fifth stat, intelligence. I will be using my purebred Kaimanawa stud with ancient breeds to create my herd. Each family will have five founding dams and one founding sire. I will have criteria laid out during each project for the six founding parents.

The sixth family is based purely on appearance and color. The criteria for these founding horses will be as follows:

Overall

  • Newborn height of 30-34in
    Extended Blanket/Leopard Appaloosa Markings
    Large Dense Spotting/Fewspot
Average or better comments for the five stats mentioned above

Founding Stud

  • Black (preferably homozygous)
    (preferably) Carrying no dilutes

Founding Mares

  • 2x Black
    2x Bay
    1x Brown
    (preferably) Carrying no dilutes

The two sub families are:

Kaokao - be gathered together
Kia Hanga - be created

The first of the subfamilies will be where blood from the first six families are mixed. The second subfamily will be where foundation blood is added to the herd to bring in new genes as well as lower COI.

Update time! I have finished the first and most important foundation line, the Huatau line. These are horses bred purely for exceptional movement. Can't wait until the rest of my herd is ready to go so I can see what these guys produce! You can find links to the individual horses above but here you can see them all together in their pasture. I'll take you through and introduce them all in the order they are listed in the pasture.
Whaea Tuatahi o Huatau (First Mother of Huatau)
Silver Bay (A/n E/n Z/n)
"This mare is a natural mover." (Green)
Confo +19
Thoughts: This girl is probably going to be the most important to my program purely because she has green movement with a great comment. Her confo is not too high so as to make me question the quality of her genes but it is high enough that she should be able to pass good numbers onto her offspring. One of the downsides is her estimated mature height will probably be about 14hh and I really prefer a range of 12.3-13.3hh for my ponies. The other downside is at 77% she is a bit too pony type for my tastes (would prefer a pony in the 60-65% range).

Whaea Tuarua o Huatau (Second Mother of Huatau)
Flaxen Red Dun (e/e f/f D/n)
"This mare is a natural mover."
Confo +19
Thoughts: This mare is absolutely gorgeous. She has a great comment with a nice confo number. She is one of my favorite colors and will help keep a gorgeous line of flaxen chestnuts going in my herd. Color and quality, what more could I ask for?! She is also rates 5/5 for Kaimanawa so she falls within that perfect range of size and type that I love. She also will mature out at 13.3hh which falls within my range. Downside is she has the same comment and confo as Whaea Tuatahi and it's not green which means her genes are possibly not quite as good.

Whaea Tuatoru o Huatau (Third Mother of Huatau)
Silver Grulla (E/n D/n Z/n)
"Your mare is easy on the eyes when she moves."
Confo +14
Thoughts: I don't have much nice to say about this mare other than her confo is decently low for a comment that is decently high. I rarely get this comment with a confo below 15. I like that she is negative for agouti as I don't want to be overrun with bay. She also has the cutest wee face. Downside is she carries silver and I dislike silver immensely. She will also mature out too tall (14hh) and she is grossly pony type (78%).

Whaea Te Wha o Huatau (Fourth Mother of Huatau)
Flaxen Gold Champagne (e/e f/f Ch/n)
"Your mare is easy on the eyes when she moves."
Confo +13
Thoughts: This is the lowest confo mare I have with this comment and she is the lowest confo horse I have in this whole family. She is just the cutest wee thing and her color is to die for. She also has the long mane and tail that I love love love. Unfortunately she is gonna be a whole hand shorter (11.3hh) than what I prefer for my ponies. She also only rates 2/5 for her breed.

Whaea Tuarima o Huatau (Fifth Mother of Huatau)
Silver Bay Dun (A/n E/n D/n Z/n)
"Your mare is easy on the eyes when she moves."
Confo +14
Thoughts: Good confo for a great comment. I love the strong dun characteristics on the legs and hope she can produce some striking dun offspring. She unfortunately will be the tallest of the bunch (14.1hh) and I can't seem to shake the higher pony type (73%) from these guys.

Papara o Huatau
Silver Amber Champagne Dun (A/n E/n Ch/n D/n Z/n)
"This colt is a natural mover." (Green)
Confo +15
Thoughts: Here he is, the big man himself! Green movement on a great comment and low confo. I couldn't have asked for much else with this guy. He has more dominant color traits than you can shake a stick at but most importantly he has great movement genes to pass on. He is beautifully in proportion and I am in love with his overall appearance. If only I could take a couple inches off his mature height (14hhish) and knock about 15% off that pony type (77%).

If you're still reading congrats on making it this far! Always feel free to lay down questions and comments. Now that I have wrapped up the movement project I'll be moving onto strength, so keep an eye out for those Marohirohi!
