Most of us will keep Grade horses around that match our main stock in body form (and maybe competition ability) to use. I haven't done a test-run on COI management, however there are others that have. Take a look in my quicklinks for a step-by-step, it should be linked in there.

Otherwise, you'll want at least three horses to be used in a round-cycle to help maintain your COI, preferably unrelated to your current stock, but otherwise stock that's at least more than 5 generations out from your current stock and themselves at least three generations out from each other (if 3 generations, you'll want at least 4 horses). If they're three generations from each other, use them as #1 first, then #3 second, then #2 third and finally #4 fourth then repeat. Just remember, the COI numbers of the parents and ancestors for 5 generations will also be calculated into the COI of the foal. What this means is that any horse that has any COI number over 0% in those 5 generations of the foal, will still carry a number somewhere over 0% COI for that foal, even if there are NO repeating horses in those five generations.

Your best bet is to breed back to 0% COI horses. In this way, you'll basically drop COI by about half each time... as long as you use different 0% COI horses.

Mine has been introducing 1 or 2 unrelated stallions to my herd and splitting them between an entire generation of mares. Then when their babies are all grown up I breed them to the next fresh batch of stallions. I also bookmark a lot of studs and breed to them to keep my herd more diverse
