Questionaire for HWO!
The following set of questions are things that I am wondering about regarding the nature of HWO's horse market. By asking these questions, I am hoping to tailor my breeding program and produce more desirable foals. I may also be looking to satisfy my own curiosity.
1. What age horses do you prefer to buy?
2. Do you typically buy mixbreeds or purebreds?
3. Would you be more likely to buy a horse with a high genetic potential or a horse with that matches its breed standard (high evaluation)?
4. Do you find yourself often buying for color?
5. What's your most common reason for buying the horse you bought?
6. Do you almost always buy a certain gender of horse?
7. Do you only look for horses that have parent(s) with some type of champion titles?
8. What horse breed do you buy the most?
I know some of these questions may not have one specific answer, but please feel free to answer as many questions as you can down below!

Re: Questionaire for HWO!
1. What age horses do you prefer to buy? under 6 months if not trained above 1/2 year trained
2. Do you typically buy mixbreeds or purebreds? purebreds/ only mix if I need them for a breed
3. Would you be more likely to buy a horse with a high genetic potential or a horse that matches its breed standard (high evaluation)? Both! Or with evaluation, if the other is a bit low and the one I'm buying is higher, then I also buy them.
4. Do you find yourself often buying for color? not really
5. What's your most common reason for buying the horse you bought? Training, local shows, breeding, and after that, selling
6. Do you almost always buy a certain gender of horse? Mostly mares, but I have bought a few stallions
7. Do you only look for horses that have parents(s) with some type of champion titles? Sometimes I do, but that is not my main goal
8. What horse breed do you buy the most? I always look for Anglo-Arabians, but if I want to make them, I look for TB and Arabians
I hope my answers helped! English is not my first language, so if you don't understand a sentence, just say it and I'll try to rewrite it!

Recently, I've had a lot of my horses sell quicker than usual, and I became curious if there was a reason behind that or if it was just a coincidence.afw wrote: ↑Mon Jul 14, 2025 2:35 am1. What age horses do you prefer to buy? under 6 months if not trained above 1/2 year trained

Your answers were clear, and unless you had said anything I probably wouldn't have known that English wasn't your first language. I once tried to learn another language through a course in school, and it was very difficult for me. Ever since, I've always been impressed by people who could speak multiple languages. Thanks so much for your reply!

Other languages outside of English are really hard to learn because the keyboards are so differentEmily_the_Equestrian wrote: ↑Mon Jul 14, 2025 2:49 amRecently, I've had a lot of my horses sell quicker than usual, and I became curious if there was a reason behind that or if it was just a coincidence.

No problem! I'm also curious to see what other people say!

2. No preference, as I mainly buy grinders
3. Depends. For grinders and mixes, HGP, if I'm looking for a specific breed then definitely eval.
4. Not really, as long as it's not greying.
5. I needed a grinder or a horse with low COI to breed into my herd.
6. No.
7. No, only for studs.
8. Probably Thoroughbreds, as they're one of the most developed breeds on here. I'm breeding for Sprint Racing and if I need to inject speed into my lines it's much easier to find TBs with good stats and a good lineage than any other breed by choosing the purebreds only option.
^ That being said, if you're using these responses to figure out what you want to focus on, I hope you'll choose a breed other than the TB as that market is completely oversaturated! There are so many other options you could choose from, and there are quite a few "recipes" that only require a TB crossed with one other breed. I'm fairly certain people would be willing to pay a premium for a rare breed with good stats, too.

Re: Questionaire for HWO!
1. What age horses do you prefer to buy?Depends on what I'm looking for. Right now, its grinders. So under 7y untrained, but up to 15y, trained. When I'm looking for something else, it's usually under 5y (AC) or any age, if I'm aiming for breeding stock. Usually always under 17 years however.Emily_the_Equestrian wrote: ↑Mon Jul 14, 2025 12:20 am The following set of questions are things that I am wondering about regarding the nature of HWO's horse market. 2. Do you typically buy mixbreeds or purebreds?Grinders, any will work. After that, it all depends on what the outcome project I'm creating.
3. Would you be more likely to buy a horse with a high genetic potential or a horse with that matches its breed standard (high evaluation)? This always fits what my project is for. If I'm aiming for purebred, it'll be breed standard, but if it's competition stock, the HGP is the better bet.
4. Do you find yourself often buying for color? More so than not, I breed for color, so yes. In fact, almost any project I am for, has color as a part of the equation.
5. What's your most common reason for buying the horse you bought? Grinder fodder (for personal use or selling after training). Although there is a lot of times I'll look at a horse form competition value and I'll roll it in to my competition line. And then also AC stock. I like my AC stock.
6. Do you almost always buy a certain gender of horse? No, it's a healthy mix.
7. Do you only look for horses that have parent(s) with some type of champion titles? Not usually, but I'm a breeder and not much of a competition account.
8. What horse breed do you buy the most?Because of the grinders, it's usually arabs. After that it's been Tb's and I think after that, grade horses. I'm a bit all over the place. But that suits me.

*My answers might differ from the norm but quite a bit, so take them with a grain of salt.*
