I’ve had 9 foals so far and only one has been a filly. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do to make it more likely I get a filly?

That is normal. It's called the Colt Curse. Likewise, you can get the Filly Curse. It's a 50/50 chance each time what gender will result. There is no way to increase or decrease the chance of either however. That said, maybe wait six in-game months before breeding again. Sometimes if you just wait for a little bit, the chances will change to what you want. But again, it's simply a 50/50 chance each time.

It's just 50% chance calculated each time a horse is bred. You don't need to wait o4 change what you are doing. It's basically like flipping a coin over and over. Sometimes you get a streak.
