They finally figured out the genetics of orange cats!

All orange fur in cats turns out to be caused by a (rather large) deletion on the X chromosome. Which is consistent with the fact that most marmalade cats are male, while females with orange are often tortoise shell. A solid orange female would need to inherit the orange deletion from both parents, while males and tortoiseshells with orange only need one copy.
