Color breeding question

Post by S T A R »

Hi! I am wondering how to get a dark solid bay horse. I see them listed as studs and they are always stunning! I just never breed to them bc I am picky about stats so wondering if there's a certain color cross that will throw a bay?

Thank you!

Agouti is Bay, Wild Bay and Brown.

If you want a super dark Agouti horse, one only needs to favor dark foals. They're chestnut, but it explains how we manage to get pseudo-black coats.

Start with an acceptable foundation. In my case, it was AC breeds that are chestnut and that have the sooty gene (among some other requirements), so that resulted in AC Belgians, Forest Horses and Turkmenes.

Here's some of the AC horses for examples.
Turkmene - Naturally Bright Chestnut

Belgian - Naturally Median Chestnut

Belgian - Naturally Median Chestnut

Turkmene - Dark Chestnut, likely from sooty

Forest Horse - Sooty Chestnut

And then you start breeding what you want into them. At first and with some crosses, there won't be much of a change at all and you need to expect this:
First Gen Cross

First Gen

But with some sooty genes mixed in and after even just a couple generations, you start to get horses that come out like this:
Sooty on Rump

Overall Body Darkening

And then eventually, with proper culling, you'll end up with ones like this:
Pseudo-Black Chestnut

Pseudo-Black Chestnut

The same can be used on agouti bases, like these pseudo-blacks:
Brown

Brown

Brown

Wild Bay

Bay

Hi!

First of all, a bay's genotype is A_ E_ with no dilutions (like cream, champagne, dun, roan etc.), where A stands for agouti and E stands for extension.

You can't get a bay from two chestnuts (... ee) or from two blacks (aa E_), you'll need at least one bay so it can pass one A and one E to its offsprings. If it has dilutions, it may be difficult to breed them out, but it is possible. For example, if you have a perlino (bay + CrCr), you can cross it with a horse without dilutions to get a buckskin (bay + one Cr) and then once again to get a bay. Some chestnuts may hide bay gene as well, so I'd suggest to cross your chestnut and black horses and see what you get.

I think you may find this guide helpful:

I hope senior players will correct me if I'm wrong.

P.S. I have this guy I can put up for stud if you want:

This is a dark bay with mealy/pangare (as far as I know). I'm willing to sell him if his stats are ok for you. If you breed him to a regular bay mare you should get some dark bays, though the rate won't be 100%. He has only one bay parent, so he's only heterozygous for it.

Two studs is good, though I'm not actually sure Celestial us a bay, his foal coat was so light...

I saw a thoroughbred dark bay for sale today in the sales forum:

Beautiful! A horse like that which had patches or spots would be something I'd cover for my own breeding program :)

Is feathers a requirement? I have a few that will have spots that I could sell!! Otherwise I can breed arabella to a stud of your choosing :)
