Offspring that somehow inherited champagne gene?

Post by pianogirl4347 »

Hi everyone, I recently bred a foal (he's 1 year now) from two foundation Turkmene horses from the adoption center. They are both buckskin. At first glance it looked like my foal just had the incredible luck of inheriting cream genes from each parent, making him a cremello or perlino, but then I noticed something odd. The foal also has tiger eyes. Odd, since neither parent has them. So looking through the guides, it says that this can show up if the horse also has the champagne gene. The problem is I have no idea which parent gave the foal this gene since neither show the signs of carrying the gene, and I would like to know for future breedings. I also don't know whether my horse is cremello, perlino, or only has one cream gene, since this champagne gene showed up and threw everything I knew about genetics out the window. I don't have any idea what he is anymore. Well at least he's gorgeous. Any help would be appreciated =)

Here is the colt:

Pretty sure what you have here is double cream on black. Pretty lucky that he didn't inherit agouti from either parent. Smokey cream is the name.

What about the tiger eyes then? I'm so confused!

Yep, I agree - metallic smoky cream. That's not a tiger eye, that's just a blue eye from two cream genes.

This colt here is a smoky cream with *actual* tiger eyes, note vivid green, and body color is pretty much the same as your colt's:

This colt is a silver sealino or brown cream (whichever you prefer) WITHOUT tiger eye, notice pale blue:

This filly is a silver amber champagne and a tiger eye CARRIER, note the freckles on the nose and eye rims - this is a hallmark of champagne, something your guy lacks:

Okay, Thank you so much! I didn't know what to think of his color. And i didn't know that two cream genes gives horses blue eyes. The pictures were really helpful and the filly on the bottom is absolutely beautiful. =)

Double cream on brown, by the looks of it.
