West African Barb

The West African Barb is a variation of Barb horse found in the western most regions of West Africa. It is a light horse used for both riding and as a draft animal. In "Horse World Online" this breed represents the Moroccan variation of Barb horse. There has been much cross breeding in recent years and now exists many varying types across northern Africa. It is believed that the Barb likely contains some Arabian blood, though it is said that Barb has had significant influence on many modern breeds including the Thoroughbred, Andalusian, Lusitano, American Quarter Horse, Mustang, Criollo, Paso Fino, and Camarague to name a few. Despite its importance as a progenitor of other breeds, the Barb is less renowned than the Arab, possibly because it was considered a less attractive-looking breed and were not a graceful as the Arabian. Heavy warhorses brought by the Romans likely influenced the breed, along with Arabian horses ridden during the Arab conquests of North Africa. Barbs have been imported to England for use in the royal studs and for racing since the reign of King Richard II (1377 to 1399). When imported to Europe, the Barbs were sometimes mistaken for Arabians, although they have distinctly different physical characteristics.

Description: The Barb is a desert bred horse with fine skin and great endurance. The are intelligent, energetic, and bold while also remaining calm and level-headed. The West African variation, at least in "Horse World Online" has a convex, or roman face profile as is typically seen in the iberian breeds they heavily influenced. Their head is also sometimes narrow, with fine nostrils and expressive oriental eyes. The chest is deep though sometimes narrow and the shoulders are often flat and straight which is unusual considering their speed and agility. They have a short back with sloping quarters and a low set tail. The overal frame is slender but with a good depth of girth. Their slender legs are tough and strong, with good hardy feet and are rarely lame. These horses also have thick, full manes, tails, and forelocks.

Common Colours: Bay, brown, chestnut, black, but predominantly grey. White markings are minimal on the legs and head.
Common Uses: Racing, endurance, dressage, and recreational riding.
Country of Origin: Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, Mali, Senegal
Dates of Origin: Thought to be thousands of years old.
Current Status: Rare but no longer endangered.

Here is a WAB - of course Ive bred it a little while ago but this linage that i started was to be on the basis of 0% COI. I have many crossbreeds atm that are in line to the thoroughbred breed that are 0% COI. Since we are doing a breeding program for AC horses - I figured why not share him for info on stats and conformation. Of course I hand select out of multiple foals to get the best potential in conformation and COI breeder comments. Thank you!
