Breeding Help for Racing

Post by rubysale »

Hey HWO,

I haven't been super involved with my thoroughbred racing line lately but the few horses that I have trained/bred have not been doing too well in actual competitions. I know that as time passes the general population of horses improves (ex. racing times are way faster now than they were a few years ago) but I feel like my horses aren't offensively bad lol. Most of the ones I show have at least 60 speed, 30 strength, and 40 stamina (with strength being the thing I struggle the most with) but they simply can't compete with all the amazing horses out right now. If I'm being honest, I haven't looked into my issue too much because I'm a little bit lacking motivation, but I am still curious if any of you have ideas/thoughts you felt like sharing. Should I just keep breeding and not worry about showing/training until I get higher confo for speed, stamina, and strength? Is it something unfortunately obscure like the "heart gene"? Again, I'm really not sure what I should do to try to improve and will take all criticism and ideas.

Also if anyone has any tbs that they would be willing to sell or studs they would recommend breeding to (that would be helpful to my situation) I am always looking. My budget is not unlimited but I would be willing to pay at most low 6 figures to buy something.

If any of you are REALLY bored and feel like being extra helpful I would love to pay someone (with horses, training, breedings, or $) who has a better racing line than me to look at some of my horses and tell me which ones to get rid of lol. I know I don't have anything super nice so I would imagine just paying someone would be easier. I'm a hoarder and will keep something just because "its pretty" and that is definitely not helping  .

Unfortunately, I can't get into looking at your horses to seek out some in-depth answers. However, I can offer some overview insight. Competitive racing stock is really tight right now and has been for some time. In order for your horses to get there, you will have to find your best timed horses (in hosted shows) and breed them to your other best timed horses. So you will be looking for those dratted heart genes. If on-paper, your line has what it takes (and from the way you describe them, they certainly do), then your herd failure is likely those heart genes. The hosted competitions will guide you to where you want to be.

As larissar has stated before (paraphrased): 'you want to breed your best horses together; you do that and you'll eventually get to your competitive goal'.

In essence, you've bred the best for racing for the body form and are just lacking the talent.

I hope somebody else can give you some additional hands-on support.

Thank you so much for your reply and helpful information. Also I knew the actual horse thing was a total stretch lol. I just know that sometimes I'm bored enough to spend time doing random things on the internet.
