Entering Events/Competitions Suggestion

Post by BlanketMonster »

I'm not so great at coming up with titles that express my idea clearly so allow me to elaborate, all horses that have never entered a particular type of event, for this post we'll use Show Jumping (SJ) as an example, should not show up when trying to enter a Level 2 or higher competition.

When you go to enter a Level 1 SJ competition all the horses that have never entered a SJ competition or that are in Level 1 SJ are able to enter, as they all should be, but when it comes to entering a Level 8 SJ competition you are still able to enter horses that can enter Level 1s and those that have never competed in the event before. I feel that a horse needs to qualify to be able to enter the higher levels of a competition discipline. There could also be a level 'grace' (I'm not sure what word to use for it) where a horse can enter, so a Level 2 can enter between Level 2-4, depending on the number of points it has in that event discipline.
It would also clear up having to scroll through all the horses that you don't want to compete in the event. Sure, you can use the areas filters, but if you have a large number horses in large areas, such as large barns and pastures, and all are competitors it is still tedious to sift through all of them only to enter a select few.

You wouldn't enter your horse that you've only competed once at novice local level then be able to go and enter into the Grand Prix the next week, would you?

Though this is just my suggestion on this topic, I would enjoy to see what others have to say!

I agree that something better needs to be done about sorting horses for entering competitions. Before I cast off a horse or put too much stock into him/her, I like to see how they will compete in various disciplines. Needless to say that means I compete with every horse through at least four or five years old, and it takes a LONG time to enter competitions with every horse I have. If I have the money, I like to just enter all the competitions and it can take a couple of hours.

All horses show up because some horses are better than others and are therefore competitive at different levels. Just because you haven't competed a horse at higher levels doesn't mean it couldn't win. I've had untrained horses beat highly trained horses because they're just so much better. All horses can compete at levels higher than they've won at, but they can't compete at a lower one, so a grace period is unneeded.

Some sort of filter options when entering competitions would help a great deal. or even the ability to limit levels when creating competitions perhaps?

Since there are competition filters now and you can enter a horse from it's own page I don't know how up to date this suggestion is. But I have a similar idea, if one is to enter several horses at once from the upcoming events list, that there could be some kind of option on the horses' pages where you can check a box or something to make the horse only appear as an option for entering in a show if it has that same level or up to 1-2 levels above it's current level.
This way you would see, while selecting horses to enter, which horses have the same level as the show or within a 1-2 levels margin of that specific show.
