Post by Artemis_Acanthus »

Hello horse community!
It would be nice of someone to help me identify my horses coat colors. I've had trouble using and comparing with the guides and would like someone expertise with identification. Thank you!

It takes all of us time to learn them. :D So don't be hard on yourself if you have trouble picking up on them. We'll help you through them. ;D

Start simple, figure out what your two main base colors are (black and red) and then add in agouti (bay, brown, wild bay)... then continue from there.

Mist Spun is a gorgeous brown. That's [black base] with agouti (brown At).

Despair is a flat black. Nothing here, that any stockings or stars are attributed to the Tobiano genes, so it wouldn't be incorrect to call her a black tobiano. Although when there's no body markings, many of us just drop the tobiano.

Abaddon is a brown dun. Forest horses don't have the cream gene, so he cannot be a 'smoky black'. Also, as adult horses, we cannot see any differences between a smoky black horse coat and a straight black horse coat. It also appears he may have a progressive form of sooty. A type of sooty that blackens his coat as he ages.

Sympathy appears to be a classic champagne roan. Or maybe you could call it a classic blue roan. Either is still correct. With a blanket. His coat will continue to change as he ages. :D That's from the Lp genes. That's a [black base] with a champagne gene and a roan gene (as well as Lp thrown into the mix).
