What color is my horse?
Hey guys I've been watching y horse grow and he seems to have a kept a foal color that all my other foals have lost. I'm not sure what color this is exactly and want to find out if its even a considered color.

That's dun on chestnut with the recessive flaxen gene.
A very pretty expression. If you had an extreme for of pangare onboard as well, you'd have our 'Pink' coat color.

Oh, and he has snowflakes there right at the top of his neck, partially hidden behind his mane. So he'll be varnishing like his mom.

Re: What color is my horse?
Eh... yes and no. A leopard varnish makes a number of things happen to a horse's coat. First and foremost, any hidden spots will be revealed as the coat 'lightens' a tad. Next is a blotchy style of coat change, usually toward the gray-spectrum, where the 'dark areas turn light and the light areas turn dark'. And lastly, depending on the strength of the varnish, your horse has the potential to loose, entirely, the red color and turn like a white-and-black style.Sea Fire wrote:thanks and varnishing means fading?BlackOak2 wrote:

Let's see if I have any extreme examples...

These horses aren't red dun, they're bay dun, so similar to yours (plus one has pangare).
They're mother and daughter with two different strengths of varnishing expressions.
Here they both are, as yearlings:

And now the same pair at 15 years.

So, you can see, they're similarly colored when they're young, but appear much different when they're old.
Your horse, going off of the dame, is likely to appear more like the first of the 15 year images. And will probably be even stronger than what I offered. But half the genes come from his sire and it's unknown what type of leopard complex genes he carries (if any) and what might've been passed down. So...

Does that help any?
