Clarify this color please

Post by kolb494 »

I just had this lovely little filly and I'm struggling to get her color right. Dam is an obvious sooty bay, I *think* the sire is a buckskin pearl dun (I'm not great with double or pseudo-double dilutes). So I think the foal is either bay dun, red dun, or dunskin (all with tobiano).

Bay dun, pearl carrier.
Dame is a smoky brown roan. Sire is a bit more difficult... I'm leaning toward smoky brown pearl.

Thank you so much. I'm glad to see that I had a decent understanding on the colors in the first place. Multiple dilutions can be challenging. ;)

Yes, you seem to have a fair handle on the colors so far! Congrats on that. :D
Dilutions are also not my strong point. But start to work with a particular set of color genes and it gets much easier to identify them.

Isn't she rather a brown dun (with pearl)? the warm spots - muzzle, lower stomach seem more in line with brown i think and her mane is really dark :/

compared her to some foals of my own and her color definitly seems closer to the brown one - even if their dun isn't as a heavy as it currently seems to be in her case ^^'

definitly agree with your guess for the parents; the sire would also be my suspect to be the carrier for the dun ;)

Nazarach is correct. Brown Dun, not what I said, bay. Looking at just the foal image, it didn't dawn on me. Sorry about that.

:D Which is one of the reasons that generally we await for the yearling pics. You're welcome to blame this one entirely on me.
