Leveling Up

How do players level up? I'm on level 6, and so far I've noticed that my Xp just goes up seemingly at random as I care for my horses. What activities gain Xp?

is there a way to see what level other players are? (i'm nosy like that lol) I joined on Nov 3rd 2015 and i'm 7,000 points from level 10 :D
