Some kind of champagne color?

Post by BeWanted »

So my mare, a cremello champagne, gave birth to this colt: http://www.horseworldonline.net/horse/profile/117283
and I have yet to decide which color he is... I'm guessing it's some kind of champagne, but I just can't find any horse that looks like him, he's a lot darker and more golden than other horses I've seen of champagne :/ Help please? :)

He is gold champagne (champagne on a chestnut base).

This also means your mare isn't cremello champagne. If I had to guess i would say she's a cream champagne, only one copy of cream.
Signature? I don't need no stinkin' signature! Everybody knows who I am already!

Okay, imagine the cream gene as a little bag. The bag has two small balls in it. On each of these balls is written eiter "yes" or "no". So a bag can contain yes+yes, yes+no and no+no, correct?

When a foal is sired, one ball is randomly taken out of the dam's bag, copied, and put into the foal's. The same happens with the sire's "bag".

So a cremello has two "yes" in his cream "bag" (that's why they're called double dilute). Therefore, when a cremello sires a foal, the foal can get either a "yes" or "yes" from a cremello parent.

Your horse is gold champagne. Gold champagne has two "no" for Cream. So neither of your horse's parents can be a cremello or your horse would have at least one "yes" for Cream.

P.S.: I'm guessing your mare is a light amber cream plus Silver (which makes the mane and tail of black-based horses lighter), so silver amber cream.

I bred the mare in question. She is a gold cream. The biggest tell is that she has dark eyes. Cremellos will always, always have light eyes.

Her dam is a chestnut so she can't possibly have gotten a cream gene from her. Her sire is an amber cream champagne. His sire is a plain old bay, his dam was an amber cream champagne as well. His dam's parents were buckskin and amber champagne (no cream). There is no silver in that bloodline.

I also own her palomino hackney pony son and her hackney/fell daughter who could be either gold cream + tiger eye or cremello champagne with or without tiger eye, both by the same perlino stallion. The palomino son inherited a non-cream gene from her.

So, yeah. Colt is amber champagne, his dam is gold cream. The filly is amber cream.
