Foundation Breed Demand

Post by kidhedera »

I have been breeding Abyssinians, but I think that I would have more fun breeding a horse with more demand behind it.

I have decided that I would like to breed a foundation breed for green stats and nice colours, so that other people can use them in their breeding programs to create higher quality crossbreeds.

Being me, this meant that I of course, created a chart of the 9 foundation breeds, how many the wiki says are in the world, and how many pure breds are for sale and stud.

At the moment I'm leaning towards Forest Horses, Caspians or North African Barbs. (There's plenty of NAB's around, but as a rule they are just such mediocre quality).

So now I guess I'm looking for some feedback from breeders since I do really want to be breeding horses that will be useful.

What foundation horse are you consistently looking for, but can't seem to find a quality specimen of?

NABs are required for almost every breed.

I always need Arabians that are not related to mine.
There are a few breeders but not too much interaction atm (I'd love to see this change). Arabians are also needed for many crosses.

But NABs with good quality and special coloring and also shiny Turks further my breeding goal, too.

When I was working on my previous project, I was really hurting for Forest Horses with feathering. I didn't like crossing no feathering into a fully feathered Belgian. You can get them from the adoption center, but it's rare. Tarpans, too, I needed those with feathering and they were even rarer to find in the adoption center.

There isn't a good supply on Belgians. They are harder to come by in different colors so I guess they would be boring that way. Have been stalking the market for days to find any pure belgian mares/fillies for sale. Apart from them is the same issue with Shetlands. They are a lot more common (with huge amount of colors) but almost always 1-2 reds. But neither breed makes huge impact on the average breed in the game.

I would like to add some nice Forest Horse bloodlines into my herd, so my vote is for the Forest Horse. Finding good ones through the adoption center was a pain and I rarely found any for sale.

I am always standing and selling colored Belgians. Some are part or mixed, but I'm getting a lot closer to getting back to purebred.

I think a huge factor when it comes to Belgians is that most of the good breeders keep their bloodlines private and do not buy or sell very often. I always try to put them out on the market when I can, mostly all with one green and no reds. They're still not the ones I want to keep in my private program if I sell them on the market.

I don't have a response to your actual question but if I were going to focus on a foundation breed I would do Turkmene because they are so darn pretty. I almost got distracted from my breeding goal by those Turkmenes!
Love the chart!

*waves* I'm also working on Belgians. Mine haven't been for sale yet because they're still in the project stage, but I'm always happy to stud my boys out upon request. I've got silver dapple on hold in my alt account. I'm currently working on metallic, and it has champagne and cream in it. If you ever want to talk to me and can't PM, you can use my farm log post here.

Hi everyone! Thanks for you feed back. Its been very helpful.

So the situation as it stands:
2 votes for North African Barbs
2 votes for Forest Horses
2 votes for Turkmenes
1 vote for Arabians
1 vote for Belgians
1 vote for Shetlands
0 votes for Caspians (poor caspians...)

Each breed has its individual advantages...

North African Barbs are needed by everyone and their dog.
Forest Horses are freaking cute and the least populous of the 3 'finalists'.
Turkmenes are pretty. SO PRETTY.

I feel so indecisive...
