Show Entry Fee Limits

Post by Argent »

I've seen a couple shows with disproportionately large entry fees in comparison to their purses. I suggest there be a limit to entry fees to ensure that winning entrants actually make back their fee.

Assumptions:
1) No host-added purse
2) 50% of entry fees are added to purse
3) Minimum five entries for show to run
4) 39% of purse goes to winner, 29% to second, 19% to third, 9% to fourth, and 4% to fifth

In a level one show:
In order for a fifth place finisher to breakeven, entry fee must not exceed $10.
In order for a fourth place finisher to breakeven, entry fee must not exceed $27.
In order for a third place finisher to breakeven, entry fee must not exceed $85.
In order for a second place finisher to breakeven, entry fee must not exceed $250.
In order for a first place finisher to breakeven, entry fee must not exceed $3680.

Letting the top three finishers breakeven makes the most sense, so maximum entry fees would be

Level 1: 85
Level 2: 99
Level 3: 115
Level 4: 133
Level 5: 153
Level 6: 173
Level 7: 195
Level 8: 219
Level 9: 244
Level 10: 270

Shows with added purse - of which there are none currently, as far as I know - are an added complication, but this is a start.

I remember when I started hosting comps, a rule of thumb I was told for the larger entry fee comps was to make the starting prize pool twice the entry fee so the show host guarantees a profit of at least half the entry fee. I'm kind of curious how that holds up to this math, let's say with a fee of 50K and prize of 100K, meaning minimum total purse 225K:
first place would get 87750
second would get 65250
third would get 42750
fourth would get 20250
fifth would get 9000

So that wouldn't be a perfect deal, because third wouldn't be breaking even, but slight alteration of prize pool distribution might make it work. Maybe the game just automatically adds "2x entry fee" to the prize pool when it exceeds a certain amount; in order for third place to guarantee break even in this formula, the show hoster would need to spend more on the prize pool than they would make back in the case of exactly 5 entries.

i like math :D

There’s nothing wrong with the current distribution of the prize pool, just with people overpricing the entry of shows. A 50k entry fee for a 100k added prize would be sort of ridiculous — at minimum my added purses are 5x the entry fee — and this is specifically not about shows with added purses.

Oh I was saying more in the event of someone who has a very high entry fee with some added purse, kind of as an add-on to what you were saying. Unfortunately it doesn't seem like there's a good way to ensure that the competition host breaks even with the high placing participants also being guaranteed a reasonable profit.

Admins could probably do some backend coding to cap entry fees and only allow fees to increase proportionately to added purse. Larissa is very clever!
