Temperament Questions

I know that temperament effects the results of competitions (which I think is neat!), but I had some questions about the temperament system.

1. Is temperament at all genetically influenced?
2. Is temperament environmental?
3. If yes to 2, what things influence the temperaments of my horses?

and a bonus, possibly unrelated question... what are the 'treats' and how do they work? I've clicked 'give treat', but it never seems to do anything.

Eating grass/hay/pasture makes horses calmer iirc.

I went and looked at the feeding page and it mentions that high sugar feed makes your horse hyper, so you are probably right.
