More Realistic Horse Breed Pictures

Post by Chiara Swanson »

I know that this probably isn't gonna happen but...
I found it troubling that certain horse breeds on here don't look like the real life horse breeds.
For instance, the Norwegian Fjord has a white mane that stands up and is streaked with black stripes.
The Colorado Ranger almost always has a spotted coat, not a solid one.
And idk if this is really a big deal but Kathiawari horses have curled ears.
Just a thought...not really expecting this to happen but it would be really cool if it did.

Much thanks, Chiara

The idea is you breed those traits into your horses so they look the way you think they should. :)

You are missing the point that the breeds we have in real life today look like they do because humans decided how they wanted them to look. The fjord horse used to be in a wide range of colours, they didn't all have the dun gene. But about 120 years ago humans decided they wanted the fjord horse to be only dun and they stopped breeding on horses that weren't dun and thus the breed became only dun (in my opinion, this is a stupid way of thinking, so much good breeding material is wasted by humans silly favourism of certain colours). Same goes with the Colorado Ranger, it's spotted because humans bred them spotted. If you want them spotted, breed them spotted. This game allows us to create new breeds from scratch. Everything but horses of the breed that comes from the adoption center (called foundation breeds) are all bred into the breed they are by crossing the foundation breeds correctly, or crossing with other non-foundation breeds. It's obvious that that won't result in "correct" colours right away. Tha't exactly how it went in real life - the breed was created before ridiculous colour restrictions came to play.

Regardin the kathiawari I see that you don't have understanding about how a game works. Stuff like big or small manes, feathers and curled ears has to be coded into the game, and they have to be done in such a way that they always fit on every single horse. The generic coding of this game is huge and very advanced. This game launched with only solid colours. Then the spotted patterns launched, and years later we got paints and other white patterns and socks and face markings. This game is still in development. Curled ears will probably come at some point, but considering that it's like 1% of the horse breeds of the world that display these ears, it really shouldn't be top priority.

Hello Sunpath,
Thank you for giving me a deeper understanding. Like I said, it's not a big deal and probably will never happen but I am grateful for the the info you provided me. I honestly don't know much about tech and stuff :P but I figured it would probably take a lot of work to make such a thing happen. Thanks again :)

However, Belgians look nothing like the Belgians in the adoption market. I would really like to see those be more realistic.

Again, the point is to breed them the way you want them to look. If you wish for Belgians to look more "realistic", then breed them that way.

The horses in the adoption centre are meant to look similar but not quite as the breed should look - we're 'meant' to breed them to today's breed standard - if we want to, that is. No-one's telling us that we can't breed log pull Arabians or sprint racing Belgians.

Now, initially I did agree with JanaD that the adoption centre Belgians really don't look enough like real-life Belgians. They're just a bit too chunky for a horse so tall. And then... I saw these photos:

So, yeah, it turns out that horses in real life can be a lot bigger than looks logically possible.

(I do still think that heavy-very heavy pony-types taller than, say 16hh, should have more leg problems or back problems or something when we get the vet update, though. I really can't imagine how difficult it must be for such a tall horse to support all that weight.)
