What color?

Post by Clover Stables »

I am stuck on his color. Is he a cream, with a spotted white blanket?

Appears to be double cream on red and yes, there's a blanket over those hips. So cremello blanket.

Double pearl is defined by pink skin and dark eyes, even as a newborn, a double pearl will have dark eyes, like this black pearl:

But a pearl & cream will look much like a double cream, having both pink skin and blue eyes.

Some things to keep in mind about pearl is:
A pearl will never come from a cream. Which means that a palomino, buckskin, smoky brown or smoky black CAN NEVER hide a pearl, therefore any foal can never be a double pearl.
Pearls stay hidden in pedigrees. Which means that the pedigree will look like a lot of base colors, blacks, chestnuts, bays, browns, then all of a sudden you'll see a double dilute. This is a line with hidden pearl genes.

There's other hints and tips, they're all covered in Totina's color guide. :D

As far as your filly is concerned, she is a cream & pearl. She goes back to this mare, that appears to have the correct color.

Some things to keep in mind for your filly. If you want to encourage the pearl, I would suggest crossing her to base colors. If the foal pops out as a base, that foal will be a hidden pearl carrier. If it pops out as a dilute, then she would have passed the cream gene onward, and not the pearl.
