Are miscarriages possible in breeding?

Post by Belle »

Hi, is it possible to breed a mare and then for her not to produce a foal? Thanks :)

While miscarriages themselves are not in the game there are two situations where you might breed a mare and not end up with a foal.

The first is due to Lethal White Overo Syndrome which causes still births. You can prevent this from happening by making sure you do not breed to horses carrying the Frame Overo gene, which is a gene you'll be able to test for.

And the second is if you breed a mare and either the mare or the stallion has a very low fertility rating making it difficult for the mare to become pregnant at all. A simple vet exam will tell you if the mare has become pregnant after breeding.

Is fertility a random thing, or something we can breed for?

It will be a little bit of both. Low fertility will run in some families but each horse will also have a random factor too.
