Breeding

Post by ST0RM »

Hi. I was wondering how to breed out a breed in my horses. Do you see what I mean? If you can how long does it take? :) :) :0

Here's some basics about breeds and breeding.
To make a grade, use four breeds. Create two separate cross foals that do NOT share a breed, then breed those two foals together, automatic Grade horse.

To make a breed pureblood again, IF using a pureblood to breed to (like a pureblood stud or a pureblood brood), you will need to breed BACK to pureblood 4 times. And then you'll have a fresh, pureblood of that breed.

To make a breed pureblood again, IF using non-pureblood to breed to, it can take up to 7 or more generations, but it IS possible. It's easier and quicker to use a non-named mix (an example of a non-named mix is Part Arabian, a double named mix or a named mix would be Part Arabian x Belgian).

To breed out a breed, use one of the two 'to make a breed pureblood again' suggestions. It may take a long time, 7 generations or more, but eventually, that secondary breed will dwindle until it disappears. Please note that breeding 50/50 crosses will only accomplish in more 50/50 crosses. It's best to use unnamed mixes and not double named mixes. If you do not have one, try breeding ONE to a grade horse. Sometimes it'll pop with an unnamed mix rather than another grade.

Does that help at all?

Thanks
I'm breeding Icelandic's and there wasn't a single pure mare on the market so I had to get an Icelandic+Arabian. If I inbreed will it speed up the process? Also is it more likely to get a filly or a colt? :)

Inbreeding right now only aids in the setting of some genes and raising COI. It won't speed up the process. But it won't hurt if the best match you see is your own mare's son.
Filly versus colt is a flip of the coin. Though many of us thing there is something else going on with which sex is chosen to pop, admin has told us that it is a flip of the coin.
