Breeding Part XYZ to Full XYZ?

Post by teager »

I've tried several times to breed a "part" horse to a "full" horse of the same breed, following the logic that with one horse 3/4 one breed and another horse 4/4 the same breed (and both horses containing 2-4 stars in the same breed) it should logically throw at least one foal that is 100% that breed. Instead, I'm seeing that all of the foals are coming out mixed breeds.

[Part Sorraia x NAB] x Sorraia = [Part Sorraia x NAB]
[Part Sorraia x WAB] x Sorraia = [Part Sorraia x WAB]

I even have one poor filly (http://www.horseworldonline.net/horse/profile/9529) whose family tree looks like this:
- Sorraia x Half NAB = [Part Sorraia x NAB]
-- [Part Sorraia x NAB] x WAB = [WAB x Sorraia]
--- [WAB x Sorraia] x Sorraia = [Part Sorraia x WAB]

In the above example, the final set of parents were each 4* Sorraias.

So this leads me to wonder... is it just not possible to breed out unwanted breeds? Is it only possible to achieve a foal of a certain breed by following the formula exactly or breeding two purebred horses of the same breed? Or am I just extremely unlucky?

In the vast majority of circumstances, it's only possible to achieve a foal of a certain breed by following the formula exactly. A Sorraia MUST have either:
One parent that says West African Barb x Tarpan or Tarpan x West African Barb (be it, half, part, or mixed) and one parent that says Mongolian x Tarpan or Tarpan x Mongolian
Two Sorraia parents
One full blood Sorraia parent and one part blood Sorraia parent that's very high in Sorraia blood
Two part blood Sorraias that are very high in Sorraia blood themselves

Your filly's dam has too high of a West African Barb blood percentage for it to go away instead of being passed on to her filly. Every one of your filly's full siblings will have her breed exactly, no variations.
Signature? I don't need no stinkin' signature! Everybody knows who I am already!

A horse must be at least 95% of one breed in order to be considered purebred.

Thanks for the response :) is there an easier way to calculate the breed percentage other than doing the math myself?

Not really, and the math is simple enough. But for reference, you have to breed a halfbred back to a purebred 4 times in order to get about 95%.

Thanks again!

Interesting related note... I just bred a half carthusian with a full carthusian and received a carthusian filly. So apparently it is possible to get a purebred with only 75% pure genes.

This is actually a display bug. I'll be working on fixing this soon and she'll show up as a Part Carthusian again once I get this fixed.

So part breeds and half breeds are useless for creation of new breeds? But would be better in the use for breeding in new colors and such into a breed?
