Books are used to evaluate your stock for certain criteria, to see how close to making a new breed they are. For instance, using the Cleveland Bay book on a thoroughbred will tell you where its weak points are- perhaps it's too light- and you can use that information to make an informed decision about what Arabian x North African Barb to breed it to. Breeding two horses that are already at the desired breed's standard is the most likely to get you that new breed
