Flaxen?
Hey there! I have another one of those genes that I don't quite understand all the ins and outs of yet. This time, it's Flaxen.
Is the gene that lightens the manes/tails of both of these horses Flaxen? And if so, is there a reason that it looks white in one horse and gray in the other, or are the differences between the expressions random? Any information on how Flaxen works and is maybe different depending on the rest of the horse's genes would be super appreciated.
Thanks, as always!

(and for bonus points, are there any other genetic differences between these two guys besides mealy and metallic? I'm trying to get better at identifying these things.)

Both these guys are Palomino, not Red w/ FlaxenRedpyre wrote:.
The golden coat and white mane are the telltale signs
Flaxen only works on a red base, and I don't think it has any visible effect on reds with cream, cream/pearl, double pearl, champagne and combinations of these dilutes. I haven't tested it out, though :)
Heres an example of a Flaxen - I'd argue this is the most common expression of Flaxen on HWO. At the end of each side of the spectrum are orange and platinum - and the washed out colour below falls right in the middle. I can't quite remember, but I think it's a homozygous recessive gene and needs two copies to express.
This horse has the orangey version of flaxen
And here's a photo I saved of a very light one

Hope it helps! :)

Re: Flaxen?
Oh lordy, I was way off! This is what happens whenever I don't have a horse that is plain dun or bay (or I try thinking about genetics when I should be in bed). Palomino somehow totally slipped from my brain, haha.Aela wrote:Oh and, for the bonus points, Dance is also sooty
Even with my forgetfulness aside, this helps a ton. Seeing the examples of flaxen, as well as the fact that it probably doesn't show when there are other dilution genes in play, is very useful knowledge. Before you reminded me about Palomino, I'd been assuming these guys were some dilution + flaxen, so it's good to know that doesn't actually happen.
And as for the bonus points-- is that why his mane is gray instead of white, or is there a visible sign of it elsewhere on his body? Because boy, I never would have guessed that one either.

Re: Flaxen?
Actually Flaxen does work on the cream/pearl gene it just doesn't effect the mane/tail as cream/pearl already makes the mane/tail white. Instead it only afffects the lower legsAela wrote:Redpyre wrote:.

Ah that's nice. I was just about to do a bit of research, but that won't be necessary now :)Baranduin Brewster wrote: Actually Flaxen does work on the cream/pearl gene it just doesn't effect the mane/tail as cream/pearl already makes the mane/tail white. Instead it only afffects the lower legs
Is it only on cream/pearl?
