So...

Post by Valkyriea »

I just laid out the lineage for the breed I want to eventually get to and it's going to take me about 22 Generations with over 110+ horses and that's not including, bringing outside influences for the genetics I want to archeive.

This shall be awesome and a very lonnnngggggg process heehee

Hooray for long breeding projects! My Lipizzans will require 27 generations, but since I plan on having multiple mare families, to reduce the number of horses I need, I've decided to have one common ancestor a few generations back, and I'm also reusing horses instead of having each intermediate be a unique individual. I'm down from ~1200 horses per mare family to maybe 80 each.

See I'm basically down to that, as well as I'm hoping for a diversity in genetics, at least with common ancesters it may save us a little in the long run.

Yikes!
I took an easier route and went with the Percheron since I'm still pretty new to genetics.
It's going to be exciting to see you guys develop your goal breeds. Good luck :)

Percherons are one of my favourites too. I'm going to be very slowly working on creating them, also Thoroughbreds. But I'll probably wait until someone else creates Thoroughbreds and begins to sell them so I can just work on breeding for performance instead.

Yay! Be prepared, I may need to ask a lot of questions soon on how to breed for this and that :)
I love the heavy horse breeds. I'm hoping to eventually breed for the Boulonnais or Comtois as I have recently fallen in love with those

Yeah see I wanted to do QHs, but after seeing it I'm not very good with genetics and may be looking into something else. I still havent decided :)

Edit: I think I've decided on Bashkir Curly for now :) may change again

I'm no good a remembering things, but if you can put a little work into something like this --> http://familyecho.com/?p=START&c=a7v2r3 ... 7959124041 It would be easier to follow till you get to your target breed :)

Ah, yes. The good 'ol pedigree chart. I haven't heard of Family Echo, it looks good. I have the Ancestry app on my iPad but it's too detailed and is a bit of a nuisance so I'm going to give my Family Tree Maker software a go as I have used it in the past when I was selectively breeding my fancy Guppies. It has a nice little Details section where I could put in details such as colour, fin type, tail type and anything else, so I'm sure I could easily do the same with horses.
It is definitely a helpful tool! Also, there are free printable blank pedigree charts online that you can use if you'd rather keep hardcopies
