Colored dots next to horses named

What do the colored dots next the horses names mean? I’ve seen blue red brown and even purple. I’ve probably seen a few more but don’t remember. Does anyone know what they mean?

If you mean the dots in the pastures, there is only blue and red, and it denotes whether the horse is male or female.
