Why are Breeders, breeding horse breeds so tall.
I have noticed alot of breeds that never get so tall are being breed to 18 - 20HH. I know this is only a game, but even so, it seems to me that we should be striving to stay within the breed heights , or close to them where possible.

Every one can breed their horses to their standards, I have Arabians that are tiny (under 33 inches) as well as taller ones.listerine wrote:I have noticed alot of breeds that never get so tall are being breed to 18 - 20HH. This breed requires a 24 - 33 inch high horses to create it, and it requires Thoroughbred in its making, so a 15 hh TB will not work. So, it all depends on what your breeding and why.

We don't have an official book of breed requirements that MUST be obeyed in a horse's confirmation, so we breed as we like.
I once loved breeding very tall Thoroughbreds, but now I always have the 5 stars rating in all of the horses that I use for breeding. If a foal of 4 stars is born, I have to rehome it.

I agree that certain requirements mean breeding for specific purposes. I have no problem with this. I do also understand that certain people may like to breed different for fun. I guess what i am trying to say is i am seeing 3-4 out of every 5 horses/ponies with way high measurements. Making it hard to breed to breed standards and for new breeds. I am not trying to condemn those that don,t. I just wish tall horses wasnt seeming to become so much of a trend

I agree with the others as I'm not breeding for Arabians but other breeds Arabians make. So, not everyone is going to breed for standard. Also since the genetics are correct and these things could happen irl it's not fair to people who might want to breed Arabian Ponys or something different from what we DO see irl. I find it very interesting to see unexpected animals.
BUT
I wish height was listed on the pedigree. I've been wanting to request it but the pedigree is pretty packed as is and can be hard to see all of the info on mobile.
This was my first encounter with the Monster Gene lol both are FULL brothers. Both parents had height problems but, I had no idea how bad until these two popped out.
13.2h

20.3h

I've frozen them for a height study one day. I get your frustrations lol.
BUT
I agree with this. The worst part is what I call the Hidden Monster Gene. The horse might not look big but produces large foals. I had huge problems with this when I first started out and I'm still having problems as I'm a low COI breeder.listerine wrote:Making it hard to breed to breed standards and for new breeds. I noticed that also; being careless for one breeding ruined (height-wise) my complete arabian line; the foal was beautyfull but now for I'm Fighting against Monsters T-T Currently I got some of them down to 17hh - but then they throw a 19-20hh foal again…
Is the tall gene somehow more dominant than medium/small?

Yea MONSTERS!!! It's a battle alright lol. The height gene isn't dominate or recessive. It just depends on what the parents carry in the gene pool... and luck of the draw. Your 17hs will still throw little monsters until those genes are gone through proper breeding.Nazarach wrote:I noticed that also; being careless for one breeding ruined (height-wise) my complete arabian line; the foal was beautyfull but now for I'm Fighting against Monsters T-T Currently I got some of them down to 17hh - but then they throw a 19-20hh foal again…

Even then there's no way to tell if the genes are gone really. The closest you can get to knowing is if one horse didn't throw any monsters in it's lifetime. However, they could still carry the genes and passed them on to their offspring.
My line has them popping up all over the place but I haven't given up on it. Take notes of which parents throw little monsters more than others and continue breeding them down. That's all you can do really.
