Equine Dilutes Question
Not specifically asking for identification of a horse, more so I'm curious if anyone knows which horse dilute is most comparable to donkey ivory (recessive). That is, in phenotype and/or genotype. I'm having my current line of Java have more primitive type and I've had some horses that are a bit mule-like; I'm curious which recessive I could add to have a donkey-colored line. Thanks in advance for any help!

Re: Equine Dilutes Question
Since I don't know the exact color, I did a quick internet search, so take this with a grain of salt.Kingsley wrote:Not specifically asking for identification of a horse, more so I'm curious if anyone knows which horse dilute is most comparable to donkey ivory (recessive). It appears that 'donkey-ivory' comes with a light/blue colored eye. Double cream or cream & pearl will offer you this combination.
However, if I'm incorrect, and 'donkey-ivory' is supposed to be with dark eyes, then you'll want to go with double pearls.
Your red-based and bay-based are the base colors that should offer you the light cream look you're looking for. After that, breeding lighter to lighter will help you to get to the ivory you're after.
Adding dun, may or may not help, however, if you get a greatly expressive dun, you may be able to achieve darker points with a much brighter body.
Good Luck.

Re: Equine Dilutes Question
Thank you! Here's a description: "Ivory is a recessive gene and is characterized by a near white or cream base coat with pink skin and blue eyes. Mottled or speckled skin around eyes, nose and genitals can be seen in Ivory donkeys. The color of the animal is dependent on the base coat meaning that a red based ivory will generally be lighter than a black based. If the donkey has the dun gene as well as ivory then it will appear to be even lighter in color, with the dorsal stripe visible. The ivory gene is rare, and breeders are constantly trying to improve the gene pool to reduce the amount of inbred ivories."
I suppose I could go for a pure line to get the blue eyes (from cream/cream or cream/pearl) and champagne for the mottling, plus maybe dun to go even lighter. If I'm basing them off dun pangare, they should be quite pale. Thanks for the help!
