Growing manes and tails

Hi,

I've got 2 horses with super short manes and tails and find this kinda ugly
Is there a way to make them grow? Or is this random per horse and do you need to be Lucky?

Hi! Manes and tails on foals can continue to grow up to 5 years of age. I've never had a horse's hair grown after that, so I believe however long they are by 5 years old is as long as its going to get. It isn't random or luck-generated - as with many things in the game, it's all about genetics. Did the parents have short manes and tails? The offspring will most likely be the same.

Some of the more experienced (or genetically-minded) players might have more information on the dominance (or other factors) of these genetics.
I have a hard enough time wrapping my brain around basic color genes!
