Colour Anomaly!
Both have the same parents, both are silver black roan, yet are different shades! Any explanation for this? Is one agouti and the other not? I have a suspicion that AWE Mystery Warrior may be dun, but I could be wrong.

Re: Colour Anomaly!
I'm no colour guru and don't pretend to be, but I think the lower one has the metallic gene?

Re: Colour Anomaly!
Possibly, but I think that the metallic sheen comes with training, and he is the elder of the two and has been trained for longer. But you could well be rightWeaving wrote:I'm no colour guru and don't pretend to be, but I think the lower one has the metallic gene?

Re: Colour Anomaly!
I was going purely off their faces, which is usually the way to check as that's not affected by training. Could be wrong though...Aliw1995 wrote:Possibly, but I think that the metallic sheen comes with training, and he is the elder of the two and has been trained for longer. Re: Colour Anomaly!
Good point! Now that I look at my other trained horses, their shine is generally confined to their bodies! Good theory!Weaving wrote:I was going purely off their faces, which is usually the way to check as that's not affected by training. Re: Colour Anomaly!
I;d still like to hear some other theories though. Any Equine Colour Geneticists among us?

Re: Colour Anomaly!
In addition to the metallic sheen from training, there is also a metallic gene originating from the Turkmene horse. The first horse seems to have it expressed minimally and the second horse is showing it rather loud. This is why the shade seems different. In addition, the horse could just have a slight variation in shade, which can happen even with siblings.

Re: Colour Anomaly!
This is what I would call a very good example of the differences between a normal coat and metallic sheen. Since they are both the same colour (silver dapple/black roan) and one is metallic and the other is not they look quite different from each other.
The second horse, which is metallic, has more contrast between highlight and shadow, especially visible on the head, where the first horse, in comparison, is more saturated/even-coloured.
