Unusual Buckskin and Brown
One of my horses has a really pretty coat, but I can't quite figure out what it is.

His sire was definitely buckskin (he matches the colour guide), and his dam is black. His grandparents have various dilution genes going on tho.
Can anyone tell me if he has a colour modifying gene, or if he's just a normal buckskin who looks particularly interesting?
His half-brother by the same dam was born brown, but has gradually gotten darker and darker until he looks almost black. He doesn't have any of those slightly lighter brown bits that I usually associate with properly brown horses tho:

Any idea whats up with him? Is the dam perhaps carrying a 'sooty' gene or something? I'm not 100% clear on what a sooty gene looks like.

Re: Unusual Buckskin and Brown
i cant tell you what your second horse colour is but your first horse is sooty buckskin.

Re: Unusual Buckskin and Brown
by the way your sire for the first one carries the sooty gene if you look at time warps father you will see that he is sooty.

Re: Unusual Buckskin and Brown
Second horse is black
As in real life, black horses start off a lighter mousy/brown colour and gradually darken out. If he would be classified as "brown" he would have to have lighter bay-ish areas and muzzle

Re: Unusual Buckskin and Brown
Thankyou! Most appreciated. I will update their colour labels accordingly. I'm quite pleased.

Re: Unusual Buckskin and Brown
Is this horse a normal brown horse or is her light belly indicative of pangare / mealy?

She looks like a normal brown to me. Mealy would be lighter. Click.kidhedera wrote:Is this horse a normal brown horse or is her light belly indicative of pangare / mealy?

Re: Unusual Buckskin and Brown
Ah, I think I see. She's pretty anyway. Pity she doesn't fit my breed standard. I need brown horses.

Re: Unusual Buckskin and Brown
she is actually a bay i think

Re: Unusual Buckskin and Brown
I can see that. She's a tricky one isn't she? Such a pretty colour, but a bit confusing.Woodstock wrote:she is actually a bay i think
Edit: She seems quite close to this: http://s70.photobucket.com/user/Totina_ ... 0.png.html
So I'm going to stick with brown for now.
