Why is it so Hard?

Post by MerrySmile »

Why is it so hard to sell horses? I've had plenty of good horses that are well priced. Pure bred, good breeds, low prices. What the heck? On other horse sites, horses seem to sell fast. What's going on here?

Depends on what you try to sell... if it is arabians, then there is a gigantic market and very low demand; it could be that your horses don't have evals that seem attractive to breeders and aren't sold/bought because of that. A high COI can also be a reason for low interest or the price was too high for the breed you try to sell... are there examples you can give?

I have a lot of baladi horses up for sale. Some of coats that I haven't seen in sales for a long time. What do you think? And I do need to get rid of them and hate to rehome. So I just wanted to know peoples secrets to it.

Well, I took a look around; Their COI is comparatively low/standard, so that shouldn't be the problem... some of them are quite aged, so that could be a reason for people to detain from buying them for these prices. For the lower hgp horses (40s and lower) some of the prices are not exacly attractive, coupled with a high age that will most likely be the reason they aren't sold well. Also, try to take a look in the sale forum, maybe there is someone that sold similiar horses, what price did they ask for (and got in the end); maybe making a post in the breeding community topic for baladis might be a way to contact other baladi breeders, try to ask what they would pay or why they wouldn't pay what you wish for...

You could (or should) also try to find ways to point out why the horse you try to sell might be attractive for others; as you said you have rare colors - some rare colors might even be better sold over a topic post in the forum.
Also the sale ad descibtions can also be used for pointing out if
- the horse has many colored stats,
- high hgp and
- low coi,
- have a 5* eval for baladi (especially interesting for breeder I could imagine)
- or even if they are trained for x-percent

only typing in the breeders report won't be of help if the buyers just skim through the pages.

Could this help you for your questions or do you still have some? :)

No problem :) and not really, just took what I would search for and what I know some others are interested in; sometimes it could also be that you are just unlucky ^^' I once tried to sell a nice, middle aged mare for peanuts and it just didn't work, then out of frustration, I just put her up for offers only and sold her in a day for nearly 10 times the amount... so I think trying to contact interested parties over the forum often works much better than just quietly setting them up for sale \^^/

As with everything in todays world - its about marketing - making people want to buy your horses over other peoples... I havent had a deep look at this post so might just be repeating what has already been said but I find you can sell quicker - and at a higher price - if you advertise on the forums, and in short - let others know... if you can go on chat, ask there... and so on :D set up a farm log with updates... get people interested...
not sure if that helps... atb!
