Breeding a rare breed
Hi to all,
Little update on the secret project that I’m working on...
So some of you may know that I’m trying to create from scratch a very rare breed (so rare that there is only 3/4 active horses left).
Once I have a couple bred I will begin to sell them because I wish to make this (here’s a clue) light built breed popular again.
From what I have seen these horses look stunning and I would love to share this breed with all of you again!
Have you ever tried breeding a breed from scratch? If you have what was it? Let me know in the comments.
I’ll keep you updated regularly but I can assure you that this is a long winded project and one I hope you’ll follow me in
Any clues what it might be?
Holly

Re: Breeding a rare breed
I've bred a few Dutch drafts almost from scratch. I bred my own Ardennais and Belgian Ardennais with Belgian mares and public studs. I have a Belgian Ardennais x Ardennais stud right now and plan on breeding him to some Belgian mares soon to try and get a few high gp Dutch Draft. I've been a bit absorbed trying to breed over 60 strength belgians and haven't given him much of a chance, but since he's still under 5 years old, I figure I have time. I'm not sure what your breed is. I'm breeding some Djerma and have bred a couple of my own Dongola to try and improve the Djerma gp. Good luck with your breed! Depending on the gp, confo, and color, I might be interested in a filly when you start selling. I mostly buy horses that would be competitive in public competitions, but I do get some just to experiment with, like my Djerma herd.

Re: Breeding a rare breed
Now I'm curious about the breed you're creating!Holly Cedric wrote:.
Breeding from scratch is literally all I do at the moment. My program was initially to recreate all Danish breeds on here, but I'm almost done, so I will have to branch out soon. It's been a * of a trip, as it can be extremely frustrating at times. Are you using your own horses only, or do you allow outside horses? Doing it on your own makes it significantly harder, but so much more rewarding!
It took me 3 months to finally get to the Danish Warmblood, which is one of the harder breeds to get to. If you have any questions or tips, I'm always ready to answer and/or learn :)
If I might share something, I've learned a couple of very important things along the way
(These mostly count if you're only using your own horses)
- If you, for example, need Welsh Mountains along the way, try to get both a mare and a stallion when you get there and save them on a frozen account - you might need them later, or need to breed more Welsh Mountains. I made the mistake of not doing this, and had to spend time making Andalusians from scratch again...
- Come up with some sort of system, if the breed you want is complicated. I'm pretty sure I've had about 5000+ horses in my project by now, and it can get kind of overwhelming at times
- Plan ahead, buy all the evaluation books, and try to spot where you might be in trouble. For example, my next step for the Jutlands I'm creating is Welsh Cobs. Welsh Cobs are made by breeding a Norfolk Trotter x Spanish Barb with a Welsh Mountain Pony x Hackney. My problem is that Welsh Cobs are supposed to be quite heavy and very pony typey, but the Trotters, Barbs and Hackneys I have on my frozen account are the exact opposite. So at the moment, I'm breeding my Welsh Mountains ridiculously heavy and pony typey in hopes I might get a Welsh Cob when I finally combine all four. If I went ahead and just bred a Welsh Mountain to a Hackney and that cross to the other right now, they would never meet the criteria for the Cob, so they would die out and leave me sooo many steps behind. Hope this makes sense.
Best of luck to you! I look forward to following your progress! :)

Thankyou so much for your advice and I’ve pretty much followed all of it already!Aela wrote:Now I'm curious about the breed you're creating!Holly Cedric wrote:.

I have a frozen account that can hold about 30 horses (frozen) and another one where all I do is use the turns to age the foals and birth the mares. I have all the evaluation books I need but I don’t understand how to get them to work?!
The horse I’m breeding is a light built and most the horses I’m using also are so I shouldn’t have any problems like that. Most of the horses I’m using have really good HGP and several gold and greens in stats so hopefully I will get good HGP on the first foal. Maybe you’ll be interested in one of these fantastic rare breeds when it’s all done?

Re: Breeding a rare breed
Hey there! I'm also working on rare breeds from scratch, on my main account. The main breed I'm heading toward is still a long ways off, but I've managed to work through Mongolians, West African Barbs, and am now working on Sorraia.Holly Cedric wrote:
I'm aiming for no-to-low COI%, so that's going to be a challenge.

Re: Breeding a rare breed
Wow! that sounds so cool! i have n idea what it is xD i was just wondering how do you breed a new horse from scratch

Re: Breeding a rare breed
Most breeds consist of other breeds so to make an Anglo Arabian you need Tb x [arabian x Tb] and that’s how you make it from scratchviccy wrote:Wow! that sounds so cool! i have n idea what it is xD i was just wondering how do you breed a new horse from scratch
