How old do horses have to be to die?

I just had a horse die at 19 years and 6 months. I thought horses had to be 20 before they die?

As far as I know - over 18. But I don't remember where I heard or read that.

I've had them pass on as early as their 17th year. However, that's kind of rare. It appears most of them will pass on between 19 and 23 years.

i know some one who has a horse right now thats 23 she hasent passed away yet
