Shouldn't this be a two star?
My Arabian mare was bred to an exmoor. I'm trying for welsh mountain ponies. The filly scores well in height, but not build. The book says that the build needs to be medium light-medium heavy, and this filly is medium light. Why is her score poor?

Also, I don't understand what body size and type means. I've been trying to figure it out, but I don't get it. Am I missing something?

Re: Shouldn't this be a two star?
I don't have the welsh mountain book, but probably either the Body Size or Type were out to much, which make up the build. Thus she's borderline on the build and she don't quite make it on the finer unseen numbers! The Body Size and Type are more important anyway

Re: Shouldn't this be a two star?
But if you read on the build is a reference and not a requirement. So look at the Body Size and Type instead as stated above.Equuleus wrote:My Arabian mare was bred to an exmoor. Body Size for Welsh Mountain Pony is 20-35% - Your filly is 39.15%
Type for Welsh Mountain Pony is 50-70% Pony Type - Your filly is 68% HORSE type
So yours is a little bit too big and of a horse type not a pony type. You could try again with the same pairing and see if you get different results that get you more stars or at least closer to range. You did get 1 star in height so you could always try this filly with a TB x Hackney later with a few stars and still get your Welsh Mountain Pony.

Re: Shouldn't this be a two star?
... huh. Ok. So it wants a medium pony type build? Interesting. I still don't get it completely, but that helped a bit. How do I get closer to a pony type? The type is throwing me off. I really don't understand the difference between horse and pony type. I read the leg length part, but I don't know what it means. The percentage seems odd. If my filly is 68% horse type, what's the other part?

Re: Shouldn't this be a two star?
The other percentage is pony. So 68% horse type (and thus 32% pony) will have quite long legs, you want something with shorter legs, more pony type

Re: Shouldn't this be a two star?
Oh, I get it now! How can I bring down the height? If I breed her to an exmoor, will she still work for Welsh mountain ponies?

Re: Shouldn't this be a two star?
Yes she will, as the foal will likely be a Part Exmoor x Arabian, which will work the same as an Exmoor x Arabian. You can still use her for the Thoroughbred x Hackney cross, but where she is high the other will need to be low etc. Takes a bit of juggling sometimes!

Great, thanks. This definitely helps. This game is more complicated than I thought, that's for sure.
