Dreaming of Horses (real and digital)

Post by Galatea »

Hi, everyone!

I'm Gala. I'm really new to the game. Just finished the tutorial. More than that, I am new to the whole idea of horse breeding. I was raised on a pig ranch and will be marrying a cattlewoman's son. So, the ranching life is not new, just horses. I adore horses and my fiance has agreed to consider allowing me to have them on our ranch. I figured tending digital horses would be easier than starting on live ones. :D

I am hoping to have fun as well as learning about the amazing creature. Though, honestly, the game system might be just as hard to figure out as the animals would be in real life. Any tip and pointers would be appreciated. I saw a thread for farm logs a bit ago. Maybe I should make one of those?

Make the farm log once you figure out how and what goals you want to play for. We don't have the ability to create private notes here (unless you do off-site), so our farm logs is what keeps track of our farm notes.

During or after the tutorial some good topics to visit (in no specific order) are as follows:
Once you figured out the basics and won't get easily lost, this one can hone where you want to go: http://www.horseworldonline.net/forum/v ... =12&t=2367
This one will give you a drop course in colors (in-depth color guides are found in the colors forum): http://www.horseworldonline.net/forum/v ... =12&t=3464
This one is the newbie quick start guide: http://www.horseworldonline.net/forum/v ... =12&t=8985
This one is the applied-training guide: http://www.horseworldonline.net/forum/v ... =12&t=6285

All of those are found in the help guides forum. Otherwise, specific questions most likely already have answers (search the help questions forum), but if you can't find it, then the community is here to answer directly.

Welcome and please enjoy the game!

Awesome that you're going to get horses! I've had them all my life. They are a joy to be around, but none of them are perfect. Every horse has one thing that is annoying. This isn't really game related, but here's some advise u would like to share.

When you get your first, I recommend an experienced, well broke, well mannered horse. A 10 to 18 year old mare or gelding should cost you less than $2500 in my area if you look long enough. Be in no hurry to buy. Also, don't trust everything everyone says. There are many dishonest people selling horses that aren't as easy to handle or as young as they say they are. There are also many that just want a good home for their horse.

I wouldn't recommend getting a weanling to 3 year old to do the training with yourself. If you don't have much experience, it could become a train wreck. I have a mare we bred and raised that I started riding 2 and a half months ago. She's a 4 year old, so physically plenty mature. She is very gentle and laid back. I know her very well. Tonight, I got on her with a hackamore and looked the barrel pattern bareback in the dark. There was enough moonlight to barely see. I trust her and she trusts my judgement, so she went where I pointed. 4 years ago, I could barely like on a horse with the saddle. This mare's mother really boosted my confidence and helped me develop my skills.

Definitely would not recommend a stud. Between mares and geldings, I like mares better. I just get along with them better. Other people like geldings. It's a a personal preference. Just try him or her out on their turf and see how they do for you. Whenever we've sold a horse as broke, we demonstrate the horse being rode and offer the people a chance to get on. Just see how you get along before making the big decision.

I know you were more looking for advice on the game, but I thought I might pass on a bit of what I learned. I've found that dealing with people is great when you're the buyer and usually insufferable when you're the seller. I hope you have a good time playing. Welcome to the game! Good luck on your equine dream.
