Horses in Barn Not Gaining Weight

Post by Lilo18 »

Hi, so i have a colt and a stallion in my barn right now and i have them on 400 % of their daily energy for feed giving them 100 % of everything i can possibly give them, hay, alfalfa, weight gain, performance mix, only thing is, they won't gain weight. As a matter of fact they just keep losing weight. What's going on??

If their food is listed as red then they are being overfed and are starving, you have to keep the feed below the red number level.

They eat their food in the order it is listed. As the first is 100% hay (and that already can make the "regular feed" number to go red, meaning that's more than the horse can possibly eat), they stuff themselves up with hay and don't even get to touch the rest of the food. Try to cut back on hay and balance their diet with richer feeds (like weight gain mix) in a way that the "regular feed" amount does not exceed "max feed" and the numbers are not red.

thanks, Tjigra - very helpful! I sometimes have trouble with my foals in the barn, regardless of the feeding combination, (even if it is apparently perfect) untill they are about 1 year old... most of time now, i just keep them in the pasture until that age
