Help! I think my hard drive is dying :(

Post by Killeroo »

I've noticed that one of my two hard drives have been making a ticking sound lately accompanied by excruciating slowness while the CPU sits at 0%-1%.
I had a major issue with corrupted files about 8 months ago and since then I have been getting random freeze ups. Today I finally stumbled upon some forum posts and it seems like my HDD may be damaged and on its way out :(

Here's a link to a 11 sec audio rec of it. What do you guys think?

Well corrupted files may be either to much storage being used up beyond limit or virus. Clicking may be fan, or motor. Unfortunately laptops don't last as long as a good computer.

    • Well if you wont do anything its certain that you will loose your HDD even with your data. These sounds are scratches that damage the disc even more and more.
You should try to store all your data somewhere else and buy a new one. This one definitely cant be fixed so dont waste your money with cashgrabbing IT guys...

    • I know you are just trying to help, but this is HDD clicking. Every spin makes this sound and damages it more and more.

I have two 500GB HDD with very little data on them as I've recently transferred most of my files onto my new gaming PC. I never had more than 60% on the OS drive and never stored anything on the second one since it all went onto my external hard drive.
I think it may have started with a virus that I had 8 months ago that corrupted some system files. I have sent it off twice since then. I'm renting it so I don't know who fixed it and how honest they are.

That's what my uneducated guess is since it sounds like its trying to read a scratched disk. I know a local guy that works at a chain store here who I went to school with. He is trust-worthy and always gets the best deals for me so I may look at getting an SSD since it's unlikely that I'll need all that storage. Unless it's still under warranty

Oh jeez...I just realised that it is nearly 5 years old so no wonder it's dying
