Lineage Warning

Post by skybluepainter »

I don't know if it's possible but it would be handy if before confirming a breeding, that if they are related down the line that we are notified. Like if we are unknowingly about to breed a mare to her uncle or great grandfather. I know inbreeding is important in some respects for breeds to succeed, but I think it'd be good for those of use who want the least amount of inbreeding in their herds. I think only having the system check back as far as one great (grandfather/mother/uncle/aunt) would be good enough.

Why are you against this, if I may ask?

    • Well as for now I would prefer COI% being fixed and counting only 7 gen as it should be... atm its counting all horses from pedigree.

To my knowledge there are no issues with COI calculation. Could you elaborate on this please?

Inbreeding isn't such a big deal that a warning is required, imo. If it's something that bothers you, for some reason, I imagine you'd pay closer attention to which horses you're crossing.

The COI calculation formula you use factors in all repeated parents, regardless of whether or not they appear on both sides of the pedigree. This isn't entirely correct, depending on how you want to look at it, because if the sire is really inbred to horse A and the dam is really inbred to horse B, the foal from those two horses is not actually inbred. None of its gene pairs are alike by descent. There are some clusters of genes inherited from one parent or the other that might be considered inbred because they are consistent as a unit, but the foal itself is effectively the offspring of two completely unrelated individuals.

No Support - same reason as Argent, if its a big deal to you, you will check it. If its extremely far back, its probably completely unimportant.

I have a freaking spreadsheet on my desktop because of all the mares, stallions, and offspring I produce! It just gets hard now and then pinpointing who's a half-sibling, uncle/aunt, grandparent. I'd like the notification just to be safe. It's not like it'd detract from the game.

Breeding up that close isn't hard to check; just move to the pedigree tab and compare pedigrees of the two horses you're wanting to breed. It's really a situation of if it's so far back you can't easily find it, it's irrelevant, and if it's close enough to be a "problem," you can check it easily. Would it detract for the game? No. but it would be an annoying extra click during a process where most people who care have probably already done their research.
