Can Broodmares Die While in Foal?

Post by IceesIceesIce »

I have one older broodmare who isn't very far along and I was wondering if she can die and, if she could, what would happen to the foal. Thank You!

I haven't experienced that but I have had them die during foaling i.e. same turn as foaling.

To expand on what QuestHaven said - if you breed an older mare she is guaranteed to remain alive until the day the foal is born. Once the foal is born (including the day of birth) the mare once again has a chance to die. The older the mare, the greater the chance that they will die on foaling day (simply because of their age, not because of the foaling itself). I believe the record age for a horse on HWO was something like 40-some years because it was a mare that was continually bred up until she died.
