Re: Over the Hill (Oldest Horse?)
My oldest mare lasted to be 43, almost 44. She was my favorite.

Mostly luck. Possibly there is a genetic factor?Kamichi Stables wrote:How are you able to get them to live this long?? I noticed you have two that are really old!!!

A part of it is that they are breeders, so they won't die while they are with foal. But there's nothing to stop them from passing as soon as they have the foal. Other than that, it's just a roll of the dice!

Re: Over the Hill (Oldest Horse?)
That's great! She really had the life force! Did any of her offspring live to be quite old as well??Maddie.Boo wrote:My oldest mare lasted to be 43, almost 44. She was my favorite.

Re: Over the Hill (Oldest Horse?)
Ooooh, nice! Keep me up to date - I'd love to see which horse holds out the longest!

Re: Over the Hill (Oldest Horse?)
Today, this sturdy mare finally kicked the bucket.
She made it to 48 years and 4 months old.
RIP little girl.

And this is the foundation mare I used for my spotted draft project, a lot of my current drafts have her in their pedigree, she died 51

Arab mare died 47

Another one, 43

I think it's definitely sort of inheritable, I have some lineages of really long living mares, but not the whole breed itself.
