My oldest mare lasted to be 43, almost 44. She was my favorite.

How are you able to get them to live this long?? I noticed you have two that are really old!!!

Mostly luck. Possibly there is a genetic factor?
A part of it is that they are breeders, so they won't die while they are with foal. But there's nothing to stop them from passing as soon as they have the foal. Other than that, it's just a roll of the dice!

Nevada is 47 years and 7 months at this moment but I'd be really surprised if she survives my playtime tonight.

She made it to 48 years and 4 months old.

I think it's definitely sort of inheritable, I have some lineages of really long living mares, but not the whole breed itself.
