Foal vs horse coat.

Post by Galdemora »

When you have a foal when will it loose it's coat?
Some of my foals have one colour coat when born, but changes later in aging.
So when can you tell it's real coat colour, at which age?

I don't have a real answer, but on my own horses I've noticed it can take up 'til they're 3, while some show earlier. I had a really bright chestnut that suddenly turned very dark at the age of 3. So I'd say around there you know for sure, but it depends on the coat. Later when Grey will be implemented it will probably take longer than some other coats to see their real coat, since greying can take years.

Usually you can see what colour they are when they are 1 year. But some variations, like sooty, does not appear clearly until 3-4 years and then continues to become darker when the horse gets older.
